Atlantic Sun, Horizon League and Patriot League Opening Round

Conference tournaments continue today with three more leagues tipping off and we will now have non stop, multiple league action until Selection Sunday. These first few days are typically non impactful to our pool standings as it's a lot of lower seeded teams playing against each other or 1 seeds breezing by 8 seeds for leagues that don't have byes. We have plenty of people that reached for lower seeds in games this week, which means we'll see a few losses over the next few days, but nothing too dramatic.

Atlantic Sun

I hate the Atlantic Sun conference tournament format where they break up teams into East and West, then proceed to combine them for the conference tournament. It really makes no sense and impacts the ability to get a nice team with bonus points in the pool since they have created two 1-seeds and two 2-seeds. We're fairly spread out across the top 4 seeds in this conference, but we do have four people that are on (3E) Florida Gulf Coast and one person that has (4E) Kennesaw State. Everyone could avoid a loss today in this conference, but it's possible we could see some upsets.

Horizon League

Seeds 5 through 12 are in action today and our pool picks are all over the place in this conference as 7 people have teams in action tonight. The majority will be rooting for (5) Oakland, (6) Detroit Mercy and (7) Youngstown State to lose so we can see some movement in the standings and knock out some possible bonus points. Unfortunately for those rooting for loses, these teams are favored anywhere from 7 points for Youngstown State to 22 points for Oakland, so keep your expectations low.

Patriot League

The Patriot League opening round consists of the 7 through 10 seeds which will have literally no impact to our pool as we didn't pick anything higher than a 3 seed. 77% of our picks are on (1) Colgate, so nothing really interesting going on in this conference unless Colgate gets knocked out on Thursday.

As we wrap up this blog entry we did see the 1st NCAA Basketball team officially eliminated from March Madness and that team is Fairleigh Dickinson. While this has no impact to our pool it shows that seeding sometimes does not matter as a lower seeded team can easily beat a higher seeded team.

Tomorrow we will have 2 more conferences tip off with the Big South and Ohio Valley, along with the Northeast conference quarterfinals. We'll have 6 conferences in play on Wednesday with many more tipping off later in the week. No pool standings update has been posted since we have not had any changes, so you're not missing anything.
