Sunday Championship Game Preview: Big South and Missouri Valley

The Big South tips off our day with its championship game between (1) Longwood and (2) Winthrop, giving us our second punched ticket. Longwood is both the number 1 seed and coming into the conference tournament had a 27% chance to win, yet only 6 of us picked them. 14 of us went with 2 seed Winthrop, which is not surprising as Winthrop has won this tournament 3 of the last 5 years. Winthrop is favored by 3 points so we should expect a close game. No bonus points will be awarded so for those that are already out or lose, not a huge deal.

Our second conference championship game this afternoon is in the Missouri Valley Conference and has significant impacts to our pool. (3) Drake will take on (4) Loyola Chicago in a match up that will award bonus points. Although 71% of us went with 4 seeded Loyola Chicago, and the analytics gave them a 37% chance to win before the conference tournament tipped off, a win here will cause separation in the standings. Even more dramatic, 5 people went with 3 seeded Drake, meaning if they win a smaller group shoot up to the top of the standings. Anyone winless after today is going to be in real trouble in terms of having a shot to win the pool. Loyola is favored by 5 points, a Drake win would be an upset even though they are higher seeded.

The standings have been updated since last nights blog post as we now have 29 out of 32 conferences with finalized seeding, impacting max points for almost everyone. I'll continue posting the standings links to ensure everyone has easy access. Our top 3 still consists of: The Gruesome Threesome, Tom and Pat.

While we're focused on conference tournament championship games, as we should be, 16 other conference tournament games will be played today. As your celebrating Big South and Arch Madness victories, you may be losing your picks in various other conferences.
